In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika. Mix until well blended, but do not overwork the meat.
Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about ¾ inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center to help them cook evenly.
Preheat the air fryer to 360°F (182°C) for about 5 minutes.
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
Place the patties in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they do not touch. You may need to cook in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.
Cook the burgers for 12 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time. Use a meat thermometer to check that the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for medium doneness.
If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last 2 minutes of cooking to allow it to melt.
Once cooked, remove the hamburgers from the air fryer and let them rest for a couple of minutes.
Assemble the hamburgers by placing each patty on a bun and adding your desired toppings. Serve immediately.
