Ingredients
  

For the Dough

  • 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ¼ teaspoon active dry yeast or 25 g fresh yeast
  • 1 cup lukewarm milk divided
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup butter softened

Cream Cheese Filling

  • 9 oz cream cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Apple Filling

  • 10 oz apples about 2 medium
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

Topping

  • 1 egg beaten, for brushing
  • powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  • Activate yeast with 1 teaspoon sugar and ¼ cup lukewarm milk and rest for 5 min.
  • Add flour, sugar, salt, remaining milk, egg, vanilla and butter. Knead for 5-7 min until smooth.
  • Transfer to oiled bowl, cover and let rise for 1 hour until doubled.
  • Prepare apple filling by cooking diced apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon and water for 15 min. Stir in cornstarch and cool.
  • Prepare cream cheese filling by mixing cream cheese, powdered sugar, egg and vanilla. Transfer to piping bag.
  • Transfer dough to floured surface, divide into 12 pieces and shape into buns.
  • Using a floured glass, press down center of each to create wells. Let rest 15-20 min covered.
  • Pipe cream cheese into centers, top with apple filling.
  • Brush edges with beaten egg.
  • Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 20 minutes or until golden.
  • Cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar and serve.

Notes

These buns taste best warm. Store leftovers refrigerated and reheat slightly before serving.
