Equipment

  • 1 large pot
  • 1 strainer
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 saucepan
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 baking dish (9x13 inches)
  • 1 oven

Ingredients

  • 8 oz elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 cups milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley optional, for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Boil a large pot of salted water. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 2 minutes until it forms a roux.
  • Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue cooking until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the sauce. Stir well.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in the cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese until melted and creamy.
  • Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce in a large mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly to coat the pasta.
  • Pour the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with olive oil. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the macaroni and cheese.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove from the oven and let sit for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add cooked bacon bits or chopped vegetables to the mixture before baking.
Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best results.
