Mix flour, sugar, salt, and cardamom in a large bowl.
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm milk and pour mixture into the dry ingredients.
Add melted butter and the egg, then knead into a smooth, slightly sticky dough.
Cover the bowl and let dough rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes until doubled in size.
Transfer dough to a floured surface and roll out to 1 cm thick.
Cut into 4-inch squares and place spoonful of marzipan or custard in the center of each.
Fold corners over filling and pinch to seal. Place seam-side down on a lined baking sheet.
Cover and let rise for 30 more minutes.
Preheat oven to 200°C (390°F).
Brush buns with beaten egg.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
Cool on wire rack and enjoy warm.
Notes
Store in an airtight container up to 3 days or freeze for longer. Reheat by steaming or warming in oven wrapped in foil.
