Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 kitchen thermometer (optional)
  • 1 wooden spoon or spatula
  • 1 kitchen towel
  • 1 baking sheet
  • 1 parchment paper (optional)

Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet.
  • 1 cup warm milk 110°F.
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar Can increase to ⅓ cup for a sweeter roll.
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter Melted.
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour Adjust amount slightly depending on humidity.
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • Add the melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until well combined.
  • Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or spatula until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
  • Place the dough balls on a lined baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Cover them with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter, if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

For a sweeter roll, you can increase the sugar to ⅓ cup.
These rolls can be made ahead of time and frozen. Just thaw and warm them in the oven before serving.
Feel free to add herbs or cheese to the dough for added flavor.
