Butter an 8-inch square pan really well.
Bring 1 ¼ cups water to a boil. Add chopped dates and cook 2 minutes.
Remove from heat, stir in baking soda, and let cool 10 minutes.
Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
Cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla.
Fold dry mixture into wet ingredients. Stir in cooled date mixture.
Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes. Cool in pan 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Serve warm with caramel sauce and whipped cream. Store at room temperature for 2 days, or refrigerate up to 5 days. Freeze slices for longer storage.
